It is critical to plan your retirement.  Active retirement can amount to one-quarter of your life.  There are numerous factors that we should consider when thinking about retirement.  Take a look at the list that I have prepared below and while this is not meant to be a comprehensive list that includes all your concerns it is meant to serve as a guide for what you might want to think about.

It really does not matter what type of home you currently live...detached, a semi, a townhome, an estate, freehold or a condominium...your choice for retirement depends solely on what you want and can afford...just as it did before you thought about retiring.

FINANCIAL CONCERNS

• What income sources do we have?
• What income will we require to retire?
• How long should our resources last?
• What impact will taxes...both income and housing have on us?
• Is there employment potential in my retirement...full-time, part-time, seasonal, consulting...do I want or need to consider this option?

LOCATION...LOCATION...LOCATION

• Where you plan to retire is important!  Is the location of the community easily accessed?
• Is it near recreational areas we tend to frequent?
• Will family and friends to able to visit?
• Are there facilities available for friends and family to stay at when they visit?

HOUSING

• Will we be able to keep up all the costs that are associated with housing...taxes, heat, hydro, water, maintenance?

CLIMATE / TEMPERATURE

• Do we have any health needs that require us moving to a specific climate?
• Are we uncomfortable in either extremes of heat or cold?

HEALTH CARE

• Do we need to stay within a reasonable distance to medical facilities or practitioners?

SERVICES

• Is there public transportation available...should we need it?
• Are there clubs and activities for us to participate in?
• Are there police and firefighters available in the community? And if not...how close are they to where we are considering living?
